Airport Home Appliance, a San Francisco bay area appliance retailer with 50+ years of expertise and 8 locations, underwent a comprehensive rebrand to better reflect their evolution and future trajectory with Defiant LA. The transformation to HomeWise Appliance encompasses renaming, brand strategy, brand positioning, tagline development, logo design & visual identity, website redesign, in-store design, and campaign launch. All to reposition the company as the definitive appliance authority focused on delivering customer value through knowledge and curation.


“Changing the name of our family’s appliance business was something my sister and I felt was necessary, though convincing our dad took time. Rebranding came up often at family gatherings. We worked with other teams before, but the results weren’t landing—until we were introduced to Michael Vamosy and the Defiant team.

Routed in the newly crafted brand manifesto and the sole focus…“We know everything about one thing”, the new strategy positioned HomeWise as the singular appliance authority. Defiant LA developed messaging that transforms complexity into clarity – leveraging 50+ years of experience and knowledge to guide customers through a wealth of choices towards smart and informed decisions. The transformation to HomeWise removed the legacy confusion of the “Airport” reference as to the location of the original store and reframed the company as the trusted authority. A new position for a company looking at expansion well beyond their original location.

While others spread themselves across categories, HomeWise goes deep in one… Appliances. For 50+ years, they’ve been learning, testing, curating, and improving their process – building relationships with every major manufacturer and helping customers. This singular focus creates the HomeWise difference: expertise that leads to smart choices.

To facilitate a smooth transition from Airport Home Appliance to HomeWise, Defiant LA’s comprehensive transition strategy leverages the new brand toolkit through actionable deliverables across multi-channel communications to existing customers,vendors, partners, with coordinated signage rollout across all Bay Area locations, and an overhauled digital presence working together to maintain trust while signaling evolution. The transition messaging—”Same expertise, improved brand to help grow” – honoring the legacy while embracing the future.

// BRAND COMMERCIALS

In this documentary-style campaign series, a reluctant film crew interviews the HomeWise sales team in their daily expertise. Think “The Office” meets appliance retail — the sales team is aware of the camera, occasionally addressing it directly, while demonstrating their encyclopedic appliance knowledge, winning the respect of the film crew. These spots are humorous, light, and support the new brand positioning. All shot in actual HomeWise showrooms with casted actors delivering subtle, smart, elevated performances. The Brand Identity brings the HomeWise vision to life through a comprehensive visual system with a complete visual toolkit spanning logo design, typography, color palettes, and more. Every visual element works cohesively to communicate the brand strategy. An approachable identity that positions HomeWise as the singular appliance authority.

// LOGO DESIGN

The HomeWise logo was developed with a bold, modern mark featuring a geometric “HW” letterform where the negative space forms a house shape—a subtle nod to the Airport house icon while evolving the visual language. This evolution moves beyond the limiting “Airport” reference while honoring the legacy, presenting a meaningful and memorable identity.

Numerous logos were explored as choices were selected, revised, refined, narrowed down to top choices, sculpted and then perfected.

Simple, direct, duality that speaks to the positioning and to the customer’s choice of HomeWise.

The typographic system balances professionalism with approachability through clean, geometric sans-serif letterforms that echo the modular logo construction.

// COLOR THEORY

A sophisticated color palette was created for HomeWise reflecting expertise and trustworthiness. Midnight Blue serves as the primary brand color—a deep, professional navy that establishes authority and sophistication. Slate Gray, Brass, and Cream provide warmth and balance, creating approachability without sacrificing credibility.

The palette creates distinction in busy retail corridors while illuminated elements ensure visibility. Window graphics transform storefront glass into brand storytelling opportunities, inviting customers inside.

Interior murals bring the brand story to life inside showrooms & factory outlets, creating an elevated retail environment that feels both premium and approachable. A comprehensive POP signage system — category headers, product information, and wayfinding — helps customers navigate confidently while reinforcing the HomeWise brand.

The website was redesigned with a content-forward approach that leads with aspiration over transaction. Lifestyle imagery showcases the feeling of home — what life looks like with the right appliances — creating an emotional connection. Intuitive navigation seamlessly connects inspiration to information, guiding users from dream kitchen moments to expert product guidance to confident purchasing decisions. The digital experience becomes an extension of HomeWise’s in-store expertise, delivering customer value through both beautiful design and functional utility. Defiant LA worked closely with the HomeWise Development team to support their online retail efforts and apply the new brand identity to their evolved site.

To launch and establish the HomeWise brand, we developed a comprehensive campaign strategy spanning documentary-style commercials, archival storytelling, teaser reveals, and transition messaging. Each campaign serves a distinct purpose in the brand journey — from honoring legacy to introducing the new brand strategy and identity to building ongoing brand equity through authentic expert storytelling. All campaigns were optimized across traditional broadcast, digital platforms, and social media.

This campaign bridges Airport Home Appliance’s 50-year legacy with the HomeWise. Using real family photographs, vintage signage, and historical moments, both versions honor the heritage while teasing the new transformation.

// HOMEWISE REVEAL

The Truck Campaign uses the HomeWise delivery truck, a storytelling vehicle for the brand evolution as the logo transitions from the old Airport Logo into the new HomeWise Logo.
