REBRAND

// SCRIPPS NEWS STATIONS

Defiant partners with Scripps News Networks to refresh their design system. At the heart of this collaboration was the iconic Scripps lighthouse – a symbol long associated with truth and illumination – shining a light on the stories that matter most to our communities. From the dynamic news opens to a robust baseline graphics system, to the promotional toolkits, weather, traffic, and every aspect of the package, we reimagined to reflect clarity, purpose, and trust. The result is a cohesive, modern design system and brand identity that underscores Scripp’s mission to illuminate, inform, and connect.

A meticulous grid system was developed to bring structure, consistency, and flexibility to the package. Designed with modularity at its core, the grid allows for seamless integration of essential on-air elements such as lower thirds, bugs, image modules, tickers, and sponsorships integrations. Every component aligns to the underlying framework, ensuring visual harmony while maintaining adaptability across screen sizes and content types.

The package includes supporting elements designed to maintain visual consistency and deepen viewer engagement across all touchpoints. Promo opens were built to be bold and flexible, allowing for quick customization while staying true to the brand’s tone.

The breaking news open was designed to heighten a sense of urgency. Bold typography, and a striking red-and-white color palette, quickly captures viewer attention.

The sports open was crafted to align seamlessly with the overall package while bringing a high-energy, competitive edge to the presentation. Built on the same grid system and visual language, it features bold typography, dynamic motion, and sleek transitions that mirror the overall design system.

SCRIPPS / WEATHER PACKAGE

The weather package was designed to visually aligned with the overall brand and functionally robust, delivering essential information with clarity and consistency.  Built on the same foundational grid and design language, the weather visuals support the brand and the lighthouse metaphor and position Scripp’s weather coverage as a guiding light for viewers. The system includes multi-day forecasts, flexible header structure, and a variety of information modules that feather in details like temperature trends, radar data, and severe weather alerts.

Ad integration is seamlessly woven into the structure of the weather segment. With the modular grid system, designated ad zones can be incorporated without disrupting the flow of information. These placements feel native to the design—balanced within the layout and visually consistent.

The custom weather icon system was designed to reflect the overall visual identity while clearly communicating a wide range of weather conditions.

SCRIPPS / COLD OPEN

The cold open was designed to be content-forward, setting the tone for the broadcast by putting storytelling at the center.  The color palette, typography, and motion language remain true to the core package, reinforcing visual consistency while allowing each story to shine.

SCRIPPS / TRAFFIC

The traffic package was crafted to align seamlessly with the overall visual system, maintaining the same consistency in structure, motion, and brand tone.  Modular panels are used to display key data such as drive times, congestion zones, alternate routes, and incidents—each designed to prioritize legibility and quick comprehension.

A custom set of traffic icons complements the package, echoing the weather icon system.
